I know this is your first part of this chain of thought but climate change which you do mention will also play a major role in the change of society as you might envision it. Speaking as another scholar, I think what will ultimately happen is the 2nd republic will collapse into regional mega states based on ideology. They could be participatory regimes, but more likely totalitarian around their given ideologies. There will be a LOT of internal displacement caused by both that and climate change. Especially on and near the coasts.
Re Fox, Etc. It was going on longer with CSPAN broadcasting congress around the clock. How Newt Gingrich, etc. mobilized masses in the mid to late 80s and 90s as well as give the christian coalition, a platform. One of the first things Lenin did was control the telegraph. Fox has done the same thing and continues to spew a totalitarian christo-fascist agenda.

Also, not sure there will be a 3rd republic. It will be a collection of totalitarian dictatorships.
