Many of my posts deal with heavy topics. However, today I thought that I would lighten up and focus on the great joy and beauty around me and those fortunate to live on California’s Central Coast. We live in a ribbon world a Chilean like strip between the Coast Range and the Pacific 10 to 20 miles wide. Rivers and creeks crisscross the landscape. Smaller towns and cities make for quieter living than the metropolises to the north and south. Silicon Valley inches up the Santa Cruz Mountains and stops at the summit for views of a world removed. UC Santa Cruz is hidden in the forest and the meadows. Miles of fields of produce in the Salinas Valley provide 40% of the nation’s greens.
In Santa Cruz County, the farthest reach south of the redwoods, these giant cathedral groves feed on the fog. Immense kelp forests teaming with life barely pierce the surface. Bivalves and myriad species open and close with the tides.

A Walk Can Have Many Beauties
A walk can have many beauties
Each a vision
Each a siren call
A step upon step.
With sun filtered by fog
Each a wonder
Each a joy
A step upon step
Of salt and spray
Each bird sings
Each monarch butterfly takes wing
A step upon a step
The swell of salt and sage
Each may roll or break
Each a world in its wake
A step upon a step
The wind speaks and the breeze whispers
Each a call
Each a silence
A step upon a step
The sun wears glasses
Each a roll of cloud and mist
Each to be a sea of glimmers
A step upon a step.
